Can a Sinus Lift Fail if You Blow Your Nose?

Blowing your nose following a sinus lift procedure can be a bit unnerving. It often makes each person wonder if they are going to undo the hard work their oral surgeon just did.

The truth is, you will go home with a relatively long list of do's and don'ts following the procedure, and one of the things on that list addresses blowing your nose. It may seem like an odd request, but in order to allow your sinus lift to properly heal, you must refrain from blowing your nose.

Blowing Your Nose is Off-Limits for a While

You will be given specific instructions on what to do and what to avoid following your sinus lift. One thing you must avoid for anywhere from 4-6 weeks minimum is blowing your nose. Sniffing when you get a bit of a runny nose is fine, but blowing it could do irreversible damage to your sinus lift.

Depending on how quickly or slowly you heal, you may be allowed to resume blowing your nose sooner than four weeks, but you may also be told you have to wait longer than the original six if your bone graft is slow to heal. The best thing you can do is wait for the green-light on nose blowing again from your oral surgeon, and try not to rush yourself.

Healing following a sinus lift is a slow and delicate process. However, if you are careful about how you take care of your graft, it can serve you well for many years to come. Don't hesitate to ask your oral surgeon any other questions you may have prior to your procedure, and never feel embarrassed about asking them anything. It is better to know now than to make a mistake and damage the procedure later.
