When to Start Using Heat to Help After Oral Surgery

Posted on 1/15/2018 by Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group
Oral Surgery Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group NY 10022If you have recently undergone oral surgery, whether limited or extensive, you should not forget that your treatment can only be successful if you practice proper post-operative care.

It would be impossible for you to recover well if you will not observe correct aftercare practices such as the use of heat.

Applying hot compress can greatly help you in your recovery journey, but if you fail to administer it at the proper time, it can cause you harm. Note that you should only start applying heat three days after surgery to help ease the pain and swelling and not a day earlier.

Home Care Practices After Oral Surgery

Apart from administering heat at the proper time, there are more home care practices that you should know so you can recover successfully after oral surgery.

For one, you should keep the gauze pressure packs at the surgical site for at least one hour after the surgery to minimize the oozing of blood and to stabilize the gum tissues that have been affected by the surgery. You should also refrain from spitting so that the blood clot would not be disrupted in stopping the bleeding.

To address facial swelling, you should apply a cold compress for the first 24 hours after the surgery. Again, you should keep in mind that heat should not be applied until after three days. To alleviate the pain, you can simply take aspirin or any pain-relieving medication.

Remember to increase your fluid intake after your surgery to prevent dehydration. You can drink several glasses of water, juices, and other liquids in the first 24 hours except for hot drinks. Maintain a soft but nutritious diet starting on the second day after surgery.
