Controlling Bleeding Following Oral Surgery Can Be Difficult

Posted on 7/30/2017 by Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group
Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group will provide post-surgery instructions.
After having oral surgery, most people expect a few things. They expect swelling, they expect to be sore, and they expect some bleeding. However, the amount of each of these things depends on a wide variety of factors. If you struggle to keep bleeding under control under normal circumstances, then it is important that you keep that same thing in mind when having oral surgery. You will likely face the same circumstance when recovering from having work done in your mouth.

Tips to Help Control Your Bleeding

The first thing to do when you need to control your bleeding is to make sure you are putting pressure on the right areas. You should have gauze in your mouth following oral surgery. This gauze should be changed as it gets full of blood and saliva, but it should go into the exact same spot it was in originally whenever possible. That way, you can keep pressure on that spot until the bleeding begins to slow.

Next, you want to make sure you keep your head elevated. By lying down, you are more likely to increase the pressure in your head, which will increase your bleeding. Lay back on some pillows on the couch as you can, and even sleep like that for the first couple of days if you can.

Finally, you also need to follow any instructions your oral surgeon has to offer. They will send you home with a list of post-op instructions. The closer you follow them, the better. Make sure to do each thing on that list as directed, as that can help you feel better, including decreasing your bleeding, faster.

For more tips on keeping your bleeding under control, ask your oral surgeon. They can tell you things they have found to work before, and advice they were given from former patients of theirs. If you have any questions, or if you would like to learn more, please call us today at (212) 245-5801.
