Oral Cancer Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group NY 10022Any kind of cancer can be worrying but oral cancer in particular can be malignant and deadly. Like most cancers, it is one that can affect everybody. Yet again, like most cancers, there tend to be certain groups that are at a much higher risk of developing it.

Over 91% of cases, the occurrence of mouth cancer is linked to the lifestyle of the patient. For this reason, it is a good idea to have a look at the factors and see if you might be in a high risk group.

Oral Cancer: The Most Common Causes

Half of mouth cancers are due to a poor diet, at least in part. This is often because food products such as vegetables and fruits are missing. This often means that those who generally eat fewer of these foods already have a relatively high risk.

Tobacco use is probably an even bigger cause. While smoking cigarettes can contribute, chewing tobacco in particular can have a significant influence and put a person at very high risk of developing mouth cancer. Overall, tobacco users are three times as likely to develop mouth cancer, in particularly throat cancer.

One risk group that is often overlooked is those who drink alcohol excessively. In fact, a third of all oral cancer cases have been linked to alcohol consumption.

Of course, smoking and drinking often go hand in hand, which means that smokers and drinkers are already putting themselves at extreme risk. The human papillomavirus (which can be transmitted via oral sex) can also cause oral cancer.
