Is a Clicking Jaw Something to Worry About?

Posted on 11/25/2018 by Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group
Is a Clicking Jaw Something to Worry About? It could be nothing, or it could be the sign of a problem that requires your attention. Whatever is behind it, when you jaw makes a clicking sound, something is not right.

The good news is that the reason behind the clicking sound may not require any treatment.

The bad news is that there are often other problems associated with the clicking sound that need some form of treatment. Instead of worrying about it, take the time to learn what could cause the clicking sound.

TMJ and the Clicking Sound

The temporomandibular joint connects the jaw to the skull. In some people this joint can fall out of alignment or suffer some type of damage. When this happens, a person will experience a variety of symptoms. In minor cases, the symptom may include a clicking sound. If there is no pain or other symptoms of TMJ, it may not require treatment. If it starts to get worse or there are other symptoms, it is best to seek out some form of treatment. This can range from the use of a device to surgery.

Other Causes

Some of the other causes behind the clicking sound may require help. If the clicking sound is a result of a misalignment of the teeth, it is something that an orthodontist can correct. Some people suffer from clicking after a trauma to the area. This can take time to heal before the sound goes away.

One other cause is an infection of the glands. This is not something to ignore. Without treatment the infection can spread to other parts of the body.

When someone asks if they should worry about the clicking sound their jaw makes, the answer is not necessarily. Most of the reasons behind the clicking are treatable. The key is finding out the cause and making the effort to fix it.
