Why Your Jaw May Be Swelling

Posted on 1/20/2019 by Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group
Why Your Jaw May Be SwellingSwelling anywhere in your body is a sign that something is wrong. In some cases, the swelling is not a big deal. In others, it is the sign of a problem that can be very serious. Swelling in or around the jaw falls into both categories. It is important to consider what the cause of the swelling is and whether you should worry about it.

The Danger of Tooth Infection

One of the most common reasons for swelling of the jaw is infection. A dental infection or dental abscess is a collection of pus. That can cause the jaw to swell. Other types of infraction that can cause the swelling include a bone infection or a salivary gland infection

An infection that causes swelling is not something to ignore. It is important to get treatment before the infection spreads and creates a dangerous health situation.

Swelling from Trauma

If there has been some form of trauma to the jaw or the surrounding area, it can result in swelling. This type of swelling is often manageable through simple treatments such as ice or heat and anti-inflammatory drugs. The treatment for this type of swelling depends on the severity of the injury.

Growth of Tumors

One of the most serious problems associated with swelling of the jaw is the growth of a tumor. Whether the tumors are benign or malignant, treatment is essential. Once the tumor is managed, the swelling may go down.

Swelling of any part of the body is a sign of a potential problem. While some swelling of the jaw is treated easily, it is important to find the cause behind the swelling before doing anything else. There are many times when a delay in treatment makes the problem worse. Many issues surrounding the swelling will not go away without some form of treatment.
