Things to Know Before Having Jaw Reconstruction Surgery
Posted on 9/7/2020 by Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group
Things to Know Before Having Jaw Reconstruction SurgeryJaw reconstructive surgery realigns the jaw to correct any abnormalities. The surgery requires the use of titanium screws and surgical plates to help move the jaw into its new alignment. Before undergoing jaw reconstruction surgery, here are some things to help you feel prepared for the procedure.

What to Expect with Jaw Reconstruction Surgery?

Before going through jaw reconstructive surgery, here are some things to be prepared for. Being prepared will help you to have a good recovery.

The surgery often takes around 1-3 hours and once you are in recovery, you should expect to stay in the hospital for 1-2 nights. Recovery at home may take up to around 6-8 weeks and until you are finding it easier to eat, you will have to follow some dietary restrictions.

Generally, jaw reconstruction surgery is low risk. Although, you may experience some bleeding and swelling during recovery. In rare cases, patients' gums or bones may be damaged.

A few weeks before the surgery, it is important to stop taking drugs like aspirin that thin the blood. These can cause excessive bleeding during the surgery that is difficult to get under control. If you're a smoker, you should also use this time to quit, as it is advised to stop smoking before the surgery and while healing.

Around 1 week before your surgery is scheduled, some x-rays will be done of your jaw. In additional, some impressions while carrying out final check-ups to make sure that you are healthy enough for surgery will be completed too.

You should be prepared to fast for 24 hours before your surgical procedure. Generally, the surgery involves fasting for at least 12 hours.

Every type of surgery is traumatic for the body and you will need to take it easy for up to 8 weeks afterward. You should take it easy and ask for help from family or friends in the healing process. Lastly, you should ensure that you are keeping up with your oral hygiene too, which is vital for reducing the risk of infection.
Jaw reconstruction surgery can help to recreate your facial appearance and comfort. If you feel you could benefit from this, contact our office to discuss the procedure.
