Treating Sleep Apnea Can Be As Simple As Getting a Custom Mouthguard

There are three different types of sleep apnea, but all have one thing in common. The patient's breathing stops and starts during the night. A sign you may suffer from sleep apnea is snoring loudly and waking up tired and irritable. While there are a number of different treatment options, most are very expensive and some quite painful if patients opt for surgical solutions. Why not start with something a little simpler and a little less expensive? A custom mouthguard is far less invasive and cheaper and yet just as effective.
Treatment Options Available
Custom mouthguards have been used to treat patients who grind their teeth and clench their jaws, but the ones used to treat sleep apnea have a different design. They are relatively comfortable to wear and easy to take while travel compared to a cumbersome CPAP machine. A mandibular repositioning device and tongue retaining device are the two types of mouthguards available to treat the disorder. The mandibular repositioning type of mouthguard adjusts the position of the lower jaw to move it forward and down to keep an open airway. This is the most common type of mouthguard. The other type, a tongue retaining device is designed to hold the tongue out of the way of the airway.
While there are over-the-counter options available, they are not as effective as a custom made one. Because they are not designed specifically for the patient's mouth, it can slip and rub the inside of the oral cavity raw which can create a whole host of other issues to address.
Getting a custom-made mouthguard is simple enough. Make an appointment and come on in to get a mold of your mouth created. The mouthguard will use this as a model to create the mouthguard. Check with us about getting a custom mouthguard to help with your sleep apnea.
